Can I Wear a Cardigan With Dark Jeans?

Opt for cardigans with interesting details such as the zig-zag pattern sweater Emma Roberts rocks at the Missoni for Target collection launch in 2011.

When you ask whether you can wear a cardigan with a particular article of clothing, the answer is almost always "yes." When you're in the mood to pull on a cardigan with a pair of dark jeans, keep in mind that dark jeans are considered a neutral, goes-with-anything piece as well, so you can't go wrong. And cardigans -- like jeans -- come in all shapes, lengths and sizes, so play around with different silhouettes and enjoy!

Sparkle

While the idea of rocking a cardigan over dark jeans might make you think, "Great. Another one of my conservative outfits," this is not necessarily true. Amp up your look by opting for an embellished cardigan with some sparkle -- think gray cardigan with silver sequin detailing or a cardigan with all-over silver paillettes. Pull on a pair of black straight-leg jeans and you're almost done. Slide your feet into a pair of black platform pumps to keep your look sexy and edgy.

Zipper Detailing

When the classic button-front cardigan isn't doing it for you, a little extra styling oomph is all you need to get excited about this versatile piece with your jeans. Look for a cardigan that zips up instead -- think black V-neck cardigan with an antiqued brass zipper -- already very chic and unexpected. Go with a pair of deep charcoal skinny jeans; if you can find a pair with ankle zips, even cooler. Slide your feet into a pair of black flats and you're good to go.

Retro

It's not always about the cardigan itself, but how you style the cardigan that makes the outfit. Pull on a pair of deep navy blue denim bell-bottoms for a '70s-inspired kick to your ensemble. Since you've got a lot of volume going on down below, pull on a cropped cardigan that hits at your waistband in a bold color such as purple. Wear your cardigan as your top, leaving only the top couple buttons undone. Step into nude platform Mary Janes for the finishing touch.

Nautical

If you're a girl with a penchant for a more classic, streamlined style, a simple way to achieve a fun look is to opt for a nautical-inspired sweater. A subtle yet playful look, a cardigan with stripes adds that extra touch of visual interest to your ensemble. Start with a white boyfriend cardigan with large navy, horizontal stripes worn over a white camisole. Slide on a pair of dark rinse boot-cut jeans and pop your feet into brown chukka boots.
