Pairing neutrals and muted colors such as brown and grey can create a classic, stylish ensemble if done correctly. In general, you can't go wrong wearing these colors together, as they are basic earth-tone hues that can flatter anyone. Traditionally, brown and grey are popular fall and winter clothing colors, but a few wardrobe tricks can make these colors fashionable no matter the season.
Brown and Grey Basics
The key to making a brown and grey outfit work is sticking with warm neutrals and earth-tones. It might feel fun to impulsively pair these colors with bright, eye-popping pieces, but chances are they will look better with more subdued, complementary colors. Instead of choosing bold separates, get color in with earthy hues such as burnt orange, mustard yellow, sea foam green and coral red. For example, a brown blazer paired with a basic grey shift dress and a coral red belt will look smart and stylish.
Brown and grey are both classic office apparel colors, but that doesn't mean they can't be dressed up. While a sensible grey blazer and slacks might be work appropriate, that same blazer paired with a brown mini-skirt can make for a fun, after-hours outfit. Matching a pair of brown slacks with a sexy pair of grey pumps is a smart look for the office and beyond. Have fun mixing pieces of both colors together to create outfits for both work and play.
Shoes, Boots and Tights
The easiest way to integrate a bit of brown or grey into an outfit is with shoes, boots or tights. For example, a pair of grey tights and chocolate color boots would flatter a neutral color shift dress. Alternatively, grey pumps can dress up a basic pair of brown boyfriend slacks or grey skirt and brown blouse. An added bonus is that planning an outfit around tights and shoes is a surefire way to look pulled together.
Accent with Accessories
Start out simple by integrating brown or grey accessories into an ensemble with purses, jewelry, scarfs or other accessories. A cognac-colored shoulder bag will pair nicely with a monochromatic grey outfit, while a stone-colored clutch will finish off a brown outfit. Similarly, a scarf with shades of both grey and brown can make a great headband, belt or tie to complement an outfit favoring either color. To fully pull a look together, choose grey or brown accessories that match the style of your ensemble.
