While your initial instinct with a knee-length dress may be to opt for a pair of pumps or sandals, you're not stuck with such a limited selection of shoe choices. Whether you're hoping to test out a more urban-inspired aesthetic or if the weather is turning chilly, boots offer a visually exciting alternative to shoes with less coverage. Test the boot waters and you'll likely find yourself knee-deep in styling heaven.

Knee-High Boots

When winter approaches and you find yourself cuddling up in sweater dresses to stay warm without losing your feminine aesthetic, opt for a pair of boots to increase that cozy factor. Start with a long-sleeve sweater dress in a bold color -- think teal. Pull on a pair of black leggings or opaque tights and then slide your feet into a pair of knee-high boots. If the only part of your body that catches a bit of a chill is your knees, you're in good shape!

Over-the-Knee Boots

When you're wearing a dress that falls just to the knees, a pair of over-the-knee boots offers a subtle yet sexy look. Let's say you're wearing a black, slinky long-sleeve shift dress. Pull on a pair of sheer black tights. Next, step into a pair of black leather over-the-knee boots with stiletto heels. Every time you take a step and your hemline bounces, the tiniest bit of your tights will show. Oh, and when you're not moving, those super-tall boots will turn heads like crazy.

Open Booties

When you're pulling on a '20s-inspired sheath dress with a drop-waist, you're in need of not-too-heavy footwear. Since boots typically bring cooler weather to mind, opt for a pair of open booties instead. They're short and show off some skin -- like a boot/sandal hybrid. Visualize a light gray, to-the-knee sheath in a gossamer chiffon fabric. Slide your feet into gunmetal-hued peep-toe booties -- very urban-chic meets retro glamour.

Lace-Up Boots

Going with on-trend knee-length dresses in fabrics such as lace or crochet calls for a super-sexy pair of boots. Envision a creme-hued, allover crochet dress lined with matching creme underpinning -- your dress has cap sleeves, a low scoopneck and a gathered waist. Push the girlish-meets-sexy vibe by opting for a pair of black suede lace-up boots with a shaft that reaches just above your ankles. Oh, and find a pair with platform soles and cone heels and your sexy factor is bumped up to smoldering in a matter of seconds.
