When your hair looks great, you feel great too. One major roadblock to having hair that looks and feels wonderful, however, is a flaky scalp, also known as dandruff. It's hard to feel confident when your hair is full of unsightly white flakes, and understandably so. Instead of hiding your head in shame, end the chapter on your flaky scalp -- pronto.
Zinc Pyrithione
End your flaky scalp crisis by shampooing your hair with medicated dandruff shampoos, many of which are readily available at most drugstores and supermarkets. Opt for shampoos with zync pyrithione, which has antifungal and antibacterial properties that can decrease the fungus around your roots that leads to excessive flaking.
Salicylic Acid
Shampoos that contain the acne-battling component salicylic acid are also helpful for handling a flaky scalp. Although salicylic acid can be effective for eliminating flakiness, it also can be quite strong and drying. To counteract the dryness, always moisturize your hair and scalp with a nourishing deep conditioner after use.
Tar Shampoos
Tar shampoos can make a big difference in the flakiness of your scalp, as well. Use a shampoo that consists of coal tar to help reduce the speed of your skin cells dying and falling off of your head. These medicated shampoos also can be purchased easily over the counter at most drugstores.
Essential Oils
If you're on an Earth Mother kick, take a natural path to ridding your scalp and hair of pesky flakes. Go to a nearby health food store and purchase a trio of essential oils -- tea tree oil, rosemary oil and peppermint oil. Blend a pinch of rosemary oil (five drops) into 15 peppermint oil drops and 25 tea tree oil drops. Then, simply add this mixture to the standard shampoo you use every day -- and wash your hair.
