Sleek, smooth shiny hair. Don't we all wish it came naturally? Some people have an easy time sleek-ifying and smoothing their hair, but for those of us with coarse hair it can seem like an impossible task. Chemical straightening relaxes the hair shaft but needs frequent top-ups to maintain a sleek, sultry look, which can be expensive. The right products can make a huge difference in the feel and appearance of your coarse, unruly locks.
1.
Shampoo your hair using an alkaline-based shampoo. Avoid ingredients like proteins, balsam or other body-building ingredients. Ingredients such as wheat germ oil, shea butter, coconut oil and macadamia nuts help your hair retain moisture. Lather carefully and avoid piling your hair on top of your head to spread the shampoo. Coarse hair is prone to tangling, and piling your hair on your head can cause the mother of all tangles.
2.
Use a super-moisturizing conditioner. Look for one that is water-based --- that means water is one of the first three ingredients listed. Use a deep-conditioning treatment at least once a week and leave it on for at least 20 minutes. Wrap your conditioned head in a towel, which allows your body heat to activate the conditioner and help it moisturize even more. Rinse your hair for at least a minute in hot water to ensure you remove all traces of conditioner.
3.
Blot your hair dry with a towel. Do not, under any circumstances, rub your hair with the towel. Apply four or five drops of hair serum to your strands to protect them against heat damage.
4.
Part your hair into small sections and blow-dry using a low heat. Use a diffuser and point the nozzle down the hair shaft to persuade the cuticles to lie flat.
5.
Use a flat iron to straighten your hair and create a sleek look. Once flat, rub some facial moisturizer into your palms and then run your hands through your hair. The moisturizer helps keep the hair flat and smoothes the cuticles. Too much, however, can make your hair look greasy.
6.
Spray your hair with a homemade hair spray recommended for dry hair. Boil 2 cups of water and a chopped orange until half of the water evaporates. Pour the orange water into a spray bottle and spritz your hair whenever it starts to feel dry.
