When it comes to the world of purses, bags and totes, satchel handbags are the ultimate in functional fashion. The satchel bag is traditionally carried in the hand or diagonally across the body. However, the satchel can look quite smart when worn at the shoulder as you would carry a baguette bag. But keep a few things in mind to make your over-the-shoulder satchel look and feel right.
Selecting the Best Handle
Satchel bags typically have two handles: one for hand-carrying and one, usually adjustable, for wearing across the body. To tote at the shoulder, select the satchel's hand strap if it fits comfortably and allows for ease of movement. Remove the shoulder strap entirely if you can, or adjust to its shortest length and tuck out of sight. Alternately, if the hand strap is too short to carry at the shoulder, then adjust the body strap appropriately and use that.
Checking the Satchel's Size
Consider the look of the satchel bag when worn at the shoulder, and select a size that is proportional to your frame. If you are short or petite, select a small to medium-sized satchel so you are not dwarfed by your bag. Conversely, if you are tall, curvy or large, select a medium to large-sized bag; a tiny satchel can make you seem that much bigger in comparison. Congratulations, though, because this means that you can wear the fun, over-sized satchels that are off limits to Lilliputian gals.
Checking the Satchel's Fit and Feel
Determine whether to wear your satchel at the shoulder by checking to see if it moves comfortably with your movements and looks good. If you have worn baguettes or other shoulder bags in the past, think about how this type of bag should feel and look. When your arms and elbows move or are at rest, the satchel bag should fit securely and comfortably against your body. The best check is a look in a full-length mirror while wearing your satchel.
Polishing your Professional Look
Satchels vary in size and style, but are typically structured in shape and offer a more serious, classic look than other purses. The satchel, particularly when worn at the shoulder, is a more fashionable and modern alternative to utility bags like briefcases, backpacks, computer bags or newsboy totes. A quality satchel bag worn at the shoulder can be just one more look in your fashion artillery to make you look and feel every bit the polished professional.
