Any kind of top -- from sweaters to tanks -- can take the form of a crop top. The defining characteristic of the crop top is its length, or lack thereof. A crop top is supposed to hit at your belly button or a little bit below. And if you have broad shoulders, you can absolutely wear this cute style.
Broad-shouldered Style
If you've got broad shoulders, a few rules of proportion and fit can help you pick out the most flattering outfits. Above all, you should avoid tops with extra shoulder details like epaulettes, ruffles, puffs or shoulder pads. All of these emphasize the size of your shoulders. The other cardinal broad-shouldered rule is to create volume on your bottom half to balance out the width of your top. Crop tops are perfect for drawing attention to your hips and they make for excellent layering pieces too.
Maxi and Crop
Maxi dresses work in the spring, fall and summer. If you don't own one, you shouldn't hesitate to pick one up. And if you're broad-shouldered, think of getting one whose bottom has tons of movement, like one made of chiffon or cotton gauze. Pair that with a cropped sweater and some heeled boots. (Heels also help to balance out your shoulders.) What you end up with is a chic fall outfit that works with your body type.
White Top Crop
Take a cue from Sienna Miller's style handbook and wear a cropped cardigan with embellishment down the front. The vertical line down the front will draw eyes away from your shoulders and down your body. Put a simple white T-shirt or tank under the cardi as a contrast that draws the eyes down toward the width of your hips. Wear a par of skinny pants and some killer chunky heels. You'll not only look like a movie star, but a style star as well.
Hipster Crop
Know what else draws attention to your bottom half? Light-colored pants. Don't be fooled into thinking they're just for warm months. They're for any time of year. It's expected when temps are high and quirky when they aren't. Whether they're white, pastel pink or robin's egg blue, a pair of light hipster skinnies with a wide belt attached will even out your shoulders. Wear a cropped vest with a V-neck T-shirt underneath. V-necks minimize shoulders too.
