Using a box of hair dye to color your tresses at home is a convenient and less expensive alternative to having it done at a costly salon. You can get a professional look even if you're a hair-dyeing amateur if you follow all of the dye manufacturer's instructions and recommendations closely. If you're still worried, there are a few other ways to ensure a beautiful outcome.
Choosing a Shade
If you want to change your raven-colored locks into honey blonde tresses, go to a professional beautician rather than attempting the dramatic color change at home. Boxed dyes are ideal for lightening or darkening your hair one or two shades, such as going from dark to medium blonde. You new hair color will most likely fall in between your natural hue and the shade pictured on the box.
Application Process
For the most natural-looking results, divide your hair into sections before applying the boxed dye to your locks. This technique will ensure that the color is applied evenly throughout your tresses, especially if you have thick hair. Comb out any tangles with a wide-tooth comb and divide your hair into four sections, securing it with large clips. Use a professional hair-dyeing brush, rather than the kit's wand, to apply the dye for better control.
Expedite the Process
When you get your hair professionally colored at a salon, to expedite the process you'll most likely sit under a hair dryer as the dye sets. You can do the same at home by placing a shower cap over your head after applying the hair dye. The natural warmth from your head will accelerate the dyeing action.
After Care
How you care for your hair immediately after coloring it at home is almost as important as the dyeing process itself. Reduce any damaging effects of the dye by using the deep conditioner that is included in the hair color box. If your kit doesn't contain one, apply your own rich, creamy conditioner and allow it to penetrate your hair strands at least 20 minutes before rinsing. Not only will the conditioner moisturize your chemically treated tresses, it will help seal the cuticle for shiny locks.
