If you’ve ever wished you could lose weight in 30 seconds, body shapers are one way you can. Shapewear comes in a variety of sizes and styles to address body issues. Minimize your bustline, tame your tummy or squeeze an ample hip for a smoother figure. While they only work temporary miracles, the right body shapers can get you into a dress or top, no workout required.
How It Works
Shapewear uses specialized fabrics that are tightly woven and have a stretchy consistency to support and compress problem areas. Some shapewear, such as a slimming tummy panty, may have very tightly woven fabric over the stomach and a stretchier fabric on the side panels for comfort. If you have the right shapewear, it can take as much as 5 pounds off your figure, according to Adam Glassman, a fashion expert interviewed in “O, the Oprah Magazine.”
Body shapers come in a number of different styles. If you want to minimize your bustline, body shapers can closely resemble your everyday bra or a bandeau that runs evenly across your bustline. Some body shapers focus more on your full body and look like an '80’s workout suit, complete with tank top and bicycle shorts. Other shapewear types include a corset-like panel that wraps around your stomach, a shirt with three-quarter length sleeves that shape the arms or a slip that shapes your stomach, hips and thighs.
In addition to helping you slip into that little black dress, body shapers are helpful in smoothing your body to reduce lumps and bumps. If you have some extra cellulite in the buttocks and thigh areas, a body shaper can squeeze and smooth these areas to improve your appearance under clothing. Shapewear to minimize your bustline also is helpful in improving your proportions, making you appear less top-heavy if you have a larger bustline.
What to Look For
The right shapewear should give you the results you want without being uncomfortable. A bust-slimming shapewear item should not cut into your breasts or back. It also should not cause extra skin to come out over the top or bottom of your bra. When trying on possible shapewear, bring your outfit of choice along with you to ensure you can achieve your desired appearance -- save yourself the frustration of finding out later that your shapewear won't work with your outfit.
