What Body Shape Do High Waisted Shorts Look Best On?

Jessica Simpson’s 2010 high-waisted jeans ensemble was a disaster that even the least fashion-conscious gal likely remembers. Tabloids blasted the singer’s weight, plastering the unflattering “mom jeans” picture on their magazine covers. The problem was that the tight-fitting, high-waisted cut didn’t suit Simpson’s ample curves. High-waisted shorts are simply not for everyone. To sizzle in this '70's style, you have to match the specific shorts to your individual body shape.

Rail Thin

Thin “stick figure” girls usually get the short end of the fashion stick. Clothes simply hang without a sexy cling -- but not when it comes to high-waisted shorts. Even with the boyish of figures, high-waisted shorts draw attention to a small waist. If you’re asking, “What waist?” pull a thin belt through the short’s belt loops to clearly define those curves you didn’t realize you had.

Extra Height

Tall chicks can pull off this look because the extra high waistline doesn’t overpower the body. Think about it. The ladies strutting down the runway in these throwback shorts are usually 5-feet, 9-inches tall or taller. If you’ve got “America’s Next Top Model” height, you’ve got the goods to go high-waisted.

Long legs

If you’ve got legs for miles, high-waisted shorts help show off your sought-after stems. Look for shorts that hit right at the waist to display an hour glass shape. Draw even more attention to long limbs with high heels or ankle boots. When it’s cold outside, pair the shorts with a pair of funky tights.

All Shapes

Don’t fit in one of the select “best” groups? Few women do. This doesn’t mean you can never wear high-waisted shorts. What it means is you should dip your toes in the trend before diving all in. Go for looser-fitting shorts that have shape. Try cut-off jean shorts and khaki cargo shorts that have only moderately high waists.

High-Waist Warnings

No matter your shape, don’t make Simpson’s belt mistake. A thick belt on high-waisted shorts can essentially cut your body in half and shorten your torso. Leave space between your chest and your waist. And, don’t pour yourself into skin-tight shorts unless you’re comfortable showing off what you’ve got.
