Red lipstick gives you a showstopping, dramatic look, but choosing the right shade can be tricky. A color that's too dark or too bright can wash out your skin. Throw your lipstick woes away because there is a red that works on everyone. Whether it's a deep rouge with blue undertones or a peachy, orange red, this makeup shade can instantly dress up an otherwise dull look.
Deep Blueish Red
If you have dark skin, bluish reds such as burgundies, plums or wines can be pulled off with little need for additional makeup -- just dab on lipstick, swipe on some bronzer and go. Darker, richer lipstick lends itself more toward the winter months or nighttime events rather than brighter shades, but the key to pulling off dark lipstick is by making it the focal point of your look. Keep eye makeup minimal, but if you have a lighter skin tone, don't skimp on blush.
Wearing Bluish Red Lipstick
According to makeup artist Melanie Inglessis, who spoke to "Glamour," you should only play up one feature at a time when you're wearing a dark red lipstick because it's easy to create a look that's much too severe. While looking Gothic is completely edgy for a runway show, it doesn't translate on the street. Avoid dark eyes and light powder makeup. (Do you really want to look like an extra from "Twilight"?) It's also important to line your lips when you're wearing a dark red because the look is so dramatic you need a clean line. For extra lasting power, dab translucent powder on your lips before you apply your lipstick and it will stay put.
Orangey Red
Orangey red lipstick, commonly referred to as coral colored, isn't easy to pull off. On the wrong type of skin, it can make your face look sallow and your smile dull. This type of lipstick works best on women who have fair or olive-toned skin. If you have fair skin you should lean towards corals that are more toward the pink side than orange. If you're skin is olive toned, choose a color that's extra orangey but be warned -- if you like to tan, you should avoid this lipstick altogether.
Tips on Wearing Orangey Red Lipstick
Because orange isn't ever a natural lip color, avoid lipsticks that are too glossy or too matte. If you choose a lip stain, it could look like you drank too much orange soda, so pick a satin finish instead. For fair-skinned women, a light bronzer or gold-toned blush can transform your look from dull to sun-kissed. This type of lipstick screams summer, so pair with a feminine sundress and some sky high, cork wedges.
