If you're pining after soft, touchable hair that flows down your back or frames your face, search no further than the blow dryer and round brush in your own bathroom. These tools are your two new best friends for re-creating a sleek salon style without spending a dime on "professional" grade equipment. Take your hair from bland to grand with a dab of styling gel and a little time bonding with your hair dryer.
1.
Spray on a coating of heat protection spray over wet hair and comb through with a wide-toothed comb to keep from cooking your lovely locks. Heat takes a toll on hair and a little protection goes a long way.
2.
Work in a generous helping of your favorite styling product, be it mousse or hair gel. Pick your weapon of choice based on two factors: your hair type and the result you want. Since you're aiming for a sleek, straight blowout, opt for a straightening product or even a volumizing mousse to add a little more height to your hairdo. Go with thicker products -- think creams or gels -- for thicker hair and select lighter products, like mousse or hair spray, for thinner hair. Follow this rule of thumb when picking your products and you'll find that they'll never let you down.
3.
Dry your hair until it's damp before bothering to break out the round brush. Work from the roots to the ends of your hair and point the hair dryer down your head from the top. It may be a pain to hold a dryer up this way but it's well worth the effort for shiny, frizz-free results.
4.
Start with the bottom layer of your hair and work your way to the top section. Clip up the damp hair you are not blow drying. Wrap a section around your round brush and, while still aiming the blow dryer down your hair from above, roll the brush down to the ends. Follow close behind with your hair dryer and when the section's gone from damp to dry, blast it with cold air to lock that hard-earned style in place.
5.
Move on up from the bottom layer to the middle and finally your last stop at the top, all the while clipping up damp sections. Take it slow while you're working. It may be girl's night out but most of us haven't mastered the superhero speed of the professional hair stylist and you'll need to concentrate on each section to ensure you look super fine when you're done.
6.
Brush back the section on the crown of your head and bring your blow dryer to the front. Lift up and brush back as you dry to pump up the volume. Run your fingers through your hair, marvel at how it flows and shines like satin, then head out into the world with an extra spring in your step and in your 'do.
