Acne can make you so self-conscious. Expensive acne treatments from your dermatologist provide some benefits, but plenty of natural remedies also exist. If you’re already using a topical treatment for acne, talk to your dermatologist before you try beetroot.

Soothing

If you’ve got acne, chances are your skin is irritated. The soothing properties of beetroot can help to reduce inflammation and make irritated skin less itchy. To make beetroot even more soothing, mix in a few drops of lavender or rosemary essential oil.

Toning

After a beetroot treatment, your skin tone will be more consistent and not as red as it was before. Beetroot can also help to tighten your skin because of its high vitamin and mineral content. Combine a tablespoon of brewed green tea with the pureed beetroot to soothe and tone acne-prone skin more.

Astringent

Bacteria on the surface of the skin commonly cause acne. Beetroot is a mild astringent, which helps to kill bacteria that can cause blackheads and acne. Adding a small amount of lemon juice to beetroot can help kill even more bacteria.

Preparing Beetroot

For the easiest preparation, wash the beetroot under cold water and pat it dry with paper towels. Put the beetroot in a blender and puree it until it becomes the consistency of a thick paste. Pour it out of the blender into a clean muslin cloth; squeeze it over the sink to remove the excess liquid. Put the beetroot remaining in the muslin cloth into a small mixing bowl.

Add to It

Putting beetroot puree right on your face works, but it is more effective and will stay on your face better if you mix the beetroot with something else first. Jojoba oil is thick enough to help hold the mixture on your face, but won’t cause breakouts on acne-prone skin. Ladies with dry skin can add coconut oil or avocado oil to the beetroot puree instead to provide a little bit more moisture. Those of you with oily skin should mix the beetroot with hazelnut or safflower oil.

Application

Cleanse your face with a mild face wash and gently pat it dry with a clean towel. Rub the beetroot mixture onto your face in a thin layer and leave it on your skin for 10 to 15 minutes. Rinse it off with warm water and pat your face dry. Don't wash your face again; doing so will strip essential oils from your skin.
