By now, you may have a full collection of every scrub, cream and rinse you could get your hands on in your fight to keep your face clear. If you find yourself hopping from treatment to treatment, only to end up disappointed by a lack of results, give your home pantry a second look. Sure, plain old baking soda might not have some big-name celebrity touting it during every commercial break, but when mixed with water, it is full of ingredients known to clear pimples.

One of the best ways to stay clear is to exfoliate a few times a week. Most methods of exfoliation include a scrubbing agent, and in fact, store-bought scrubs usually have some kind of gritty substance in them. Because of its naturally coarse consistency, a solution of baking soda and water is just as effective as any expensive scrub. The Beauty Brains website claims that it "has the ability to neutralize other substances," so it will work double time to keep you clear.

PH Balancing Effect

In an article called "Blood Chemistry -- Balancing PH," homeopathy specialist David Dancu reports that baking soda has the ability to naturally balance your body's pH levels. When your body -- or skin -- is too acidic, it has the tendency to create more sebum in the pores, which can cause breakouts. By applying a baking-soda-and-water solution, you can return alkalinity to your skin. All of that is a fancy way of saying that baking soda can reduce how oily your face is, and help with your acne problem.

Unclogging Pores reveals that a natural process inside your body creates something called androgens, which can lead to the overproduction of sebum. The result is clogged pores and nasty breakouts. You can create a pore-cleansing mask by adding about 1/2 cup of baking soda to a cup of warm water. Spread the paste over your face and allow it to sit for about 15 minutes. Once removed, this natural mask will pull unwanted dirt and oil out of your pores to help prevent breakouts.

Clear Complexion

Another problem that comes along with having zits is red, uneven skin. Called blemishes, these areas are caused by a pH imbalance, dryness or even irritation of the skin. Baking soda can also help to smooth out your complexion and kick those blotches to the curb by killing off dead skin cells. Simply mix a few tablespoons of baking soda with warm water and scrub as you would with any regular treatment. Be careful not to overdo this one because it can lead to further irritation.
