How to Add a Sash to a Dress

Some dresses are stunning all on their own, but if your favorite gown is missing something, try adding a sash. A sash is simply a wide swath of fabric that wraps around your waist, adding a punch of color to an otherwise drab dress. Worn high up under your chest, over your natural waist or down low around your hips, sashes are the easy way to give your style just the right amount of “oomph.”
1.
Choose a sash that complements both your dress color and body shape. Black or white dresses look fabulous when paired with sashes of any color, including patterned sashes. If you’re picking up a sash for a colored dress, stick within the same color base -- a light blue sash for a dark blue dress or lavender sash for an eggplant gown. Choose a narrow sash to disguise a spreading waist or select a wider piece of fabric to give the illusion of a curvy figure.
2.
Pick a sash fabric that pairs with the material of your dress. Sashes are typically made from heavy fabrics such as satin but may also be constructed from lightweight materials such as lace. When in doubt, match the weight and material of the sash with that of your dress: Pair heavy, silky gowns with satiny sashes and airy dresses made of fabric such as cotton with light, lacy sashes.
3.
Wrap the flat front of the sash around your waist, pulling the ends together until they meet at your lower back. Tie the sash in a half square knot, and use a couple of safety pins at the front to keep the sash from slipping down. Pinch the dress and sash together and slip the pins in where the sash meets the dress to conceal them from view.
4.
Tie another half knot in the sash to hold it in place. If boring square knots aren’t your thing, tie a small bow at the back of the sash.
5.
Add a brooch or large pin to the front of the sash for an added touch of femininity. Pin the brooch a little off-center for a bit of fun, playful flair.

Tips & Tricks
Sashes can be as long or short as you like, as long as they wrap all the way around your body. Any extra material will simply hang down under the knot for a bit of color at the back of the dress.
