You just walked into a party feeling confident, beautiful and oh-so-fabulous. But then the unimaginable happens--you realize someone else is wearing the exact same outfit as you. Refrain from throwing pride to the wind and running out of there like your outfit just caught fire. You can prevent this from happening or salvage a fashion fiasco by throwing on a black sash.

1.

Pick the perfect outfit for your black sash. Models and celebrities have been spotted wearing this trend in one of two ways. The first is to add the sash to a solid or color-blocked outfit. This dash of black makes a funky color scheme more glamorous. Throw it on with vibrant pants and a neon shirt, or wear it with a solid, pastel dress. On the other hand, you can use a black sash to pick up on the black in a busy pattern. This helps make a daytime floral or stripe more evening-appropriate.

2.

Find the right sash. If you've purchased dresses or other clothing items that came with a black tie, belt or sash, you can use that sash with other outfits, too. If you don't have a sash from another item of clothing, pick up an extra-long, thin scarf. It should be at least as long as your waist plus about two feet. The longer you go, the more dramatic you can make your sash.

3.

Tie the sash at your natural waist whenever possible -- for example, if you're wearing an item like a dress without a defined waist built in. Because your natural waist is always the thinnest part of your figure, it's most flattering to wear a sash here.

4.

While the natural waist is a great guideline for where to wear your sash, sometimes your outfit dictates where your sash needs to be worn. For example, if you're wearing shorts, pants or a skirt, you'll wear your sash wherever your bottom meets your top. Take advantage of belt loops if you've got them, because this will keep your sash where it belongs. Otherwise, you may want to discretely pin your sash in place. A sash -- especially in a silky material -- may tend to ride up or droop down to fall at the thinnest part of your torso.

5.

Tie your sash in a dramatic bow. A stiffer material can create a tidy kimono-like knot, or a long droopy bow can look feminine and romantic. Choose the appropriate tie to compliment your outfit, and then turn your sash so your bow is in the most flattering position. Centering the bow in the front is girly and playful, while positioning it over one hip is more sexy. Turned all the way around and falling over your tush, a sash is glamorous and classic. Check out each look in a full-length mirror to be sure you're flattering your hips and backside.

Things You'll Need

1.Black fabric sash or any long, thin black scarf

3.Safety pins (optional)

2.Floor-length mirror

Tips & Tricks

As you're stripping your dresses of the sashes they came with in the store, you should also trim off the fabric loops used to hold the sash in place. Those shouldn't be used as belt loops; you should wear your sash at your natural waist.

If you don't work black into your outfit in some other way, your dramatic sash can be overwhelming. Whether you do it with shoes, a bag, a cardigan or jewelry, make sure you complement your sash with some other black element.
